CS-30 - The Ideal Club Racer or Family Cruiser

Avocet is a 30-foot cruiser/racer built by CS Yachts in 1985 was designed by Tony Castro  a well known English designer with an eye towards comfortable, performance oriented yachts. CS, in its Brampton Ontario factory had the reputation for building some of the finest production sailboats in North America.  Over 500 CS-30's were built in the 1980's before the 1990 U.S. "luxury tax" devastated the North American sailboat industry.

Avocet has proven to be very comfortable during SF Bay cruising with ample storage for food, equipment and clothing.  The very spacious main salon is larger than many boats in the 30 to 34 foot range.  There is 6' 2" headroom in the main salon - rare on a vessel this size. Although we have not done any extended cruising in Avocet, she is very strongly built and rigged and is capable of heading out of SF  Bay for a week or two without a problem.

She is very easy to sail with just two people and I have single-handed her numerous times with the help of the autopilot.  All lines lead aft to the cockpit through nine rope clutches and six cam-cleats.  Even the two in-boom reefing lines lead aft, so reefing can be accomplished without going forward to the mast.   Handling the boat under power is easy, there is no problem getting in and out of tight slips and crowded mooring fields.  She very quickly instilled confidence in her captain and crew who have sailed on her in the 5 years we have owned her. You will also find yourself reaching your destinations quickly.

Avocet has a powerful rig and a light, balanced helm that has allowed us to pass most other 30 footers and many boats even larger.  She sails very well in light air, but is stiff enough to handle the heavy summer afternoon breezes on the Bay.  You will find yourself shortening sail when the winds reach 15 knots, but the in-boom reefing makes the task easy and quick. If you have any interest in doing some club or beer can racing,  CS-30’s have a great reputation as proven winners and are easy to sail to their PHRF rating.

We have taken pride in taking good care of Avocet both cosmetically and mechanically.  We will be sad to see her go but a career-change  has dramatically impacted our free time.  I now live and work overseas for over six months each year and as a result have little time to devote to sailing when back in California.  If you are looking for a sailboat in the 30-foot range have a look at Avocet and compare her to the many “high volume” boats on the market.  We are sure she will serve you and your family as well as she has served us.

Because the majority of the CS fleet is on the Great Lakes and  British Columbia, you may not recognize the name or appreciate the quality reputation.  I invite you to use the links above to research more about CS Yachts and the high esteem their owners hold them in.  I recommend you search out other CS-30 listings to see the prices that these vessels command.  Current listings that can be found on Yacht-World.Com show them ranging in price (USD) from $36,000 to $47,000.    We feel we have priced Avocet very fairly in an effort to see that she finds a new owner who will enjoy her as much as we have.

Selling Price: US $27,900
